A year in the life of our Miss Riley

The Paper Queen Strikes Again

My sister-in-law is in town, and since I totally procrastinated on her Christmas gifts this year, I got to see her open them in person — with Riley’s help, of course.

After the paper was disposed of, she inspected all the contents, particularly the dog toys for her mini Schnauzer cousins back in Florida.

Riley’s aunt┬ásays that will just make the gifts extra-intriguing to her pack.

(Despite her advanced years, Riley was a whirling dervish with the paper, so these are the best shots I could get!)

Riley Gets Visitors

Yesterday, my phone chimed with a text — a very welcome text. My oldest friend in the world (we’ve been friends since we were 3 years old) was in town with her kids — could they stop by and visit? She and her oldest son had come to visit in January, and he had told his brother and sister all about Riley, and the other kids were dying to meet her.

So Mary, Ethan, Ezra, and Nora all came to visit today. Riley almost didn’t know what to make of all the attention, and she was in seventh heaven when the kids brought out paper for her to shred, much to their delight. It was a great visit, and it totally made Riley’s weekend (and mine). Thanks so much, gang, you are welcome any time!

Throwback Thursday: Christmas 2003

As you can see, Riley’s penchant for crazed wrapping paper ripping is a lifelong propensity.

Riley and the Wrapping Paper

I got a present in the mail today, which means one thing: time for Riley to go completely nuts over the wrapping paper. When she flips out like this, I forget how old she is, because she’s acting the same way she did the first time she opened a present.

Paper Frenzy!

Because we’re giant cowards when it comes to having to give shots, I threw myself on the mercy of my dear friend and soul sister Gina, who spent many years as a vet tech, to come over and give Riley her second cortisone shot. And she was so kind and educational about it that I think I might be able to do it myself if there is a third time. So thank you Gina! čÖé

I didn’t get to see Gina at Christmas, so her present was still in our house. Naturally, Riley flipped out over the unwrapping ritual and in short order I had paper shreds all over my living room. Hard to begrudge her when it makes her so happy:

The Crazed Present Monster Strikes Again

Today was my husband’s birthday, which meant presents…which meant more manic paper-ripping enthusiasm from Riley…

A Christmas Pictorial

Presents have always been Riley’s biggest weakness. That first Christmas, when we coaxed her to open her own gifts may have been the teensiest little mistake because she then decided that All the Wrapped Things Belong to Her. I don’t think it’s a mistake, though, because it’s so entertaining.

Despite her age, opening presents this morning was still like the first fifteen minutes of Saving Private Ryan:

Fortunately for the people presents, she honestly has no interest in a package once the wrapping is off — that’s what she’s after:

Even though she doesn’t play with toys anymore, I still got her one, because, you know, Christmas. And my sister-in-law got her a Lambchop squeaky. She┬ánosed around with them once the paper carnage was cleared:

Then, satisfied that things were back to normal, it was nap time:

Happy holidays to everyone, from Miss Riley and me!
