A year in the life of our Miss Riley

A Little More Padding Goes a Long Way

Riley’s bed is a layered affair. The bottom is a proper dog bed, a 2-inch memory foam pad. The middle is an old quilt that I folded on top of it to get Riley to accept the foam bed. And the topper is a fleece mat that has a self-heating core. I’ve noticed Riley has been reluctant to hang with me in the home office in spite of my moving the self-heating topper to her bed downstairs. I thought it might help to bring down the rest of her bed — after all, she’s not upstairs to use it — and the extra padding might help.

So today I brought it down. At first, she treated it like it was something new and not entirely welcome — standing near it and panting in distress because it was taking up the space she wanted to occupy, sniffing at it and walking around it. Finally, I got down on the floor and sat in front of her while she was standing on the bed. With me there, she finally settled, and maybe I’m being fanciful, but once she was laying down on it, she seemed to have an air of, “Ahhh. I remember this.”

Whether she really did or I’m just anthropomorphizing, she did stay in the office with me all day.

I do have to say it feels really weird to be upstairs and not see her bed next to ours. I hope it’s not permanent.
