A year in the life of our Miss Riley

Slow and Steady

on March 6, 2015

Riley’s mood and appetite are still good, but she fell four times today. As her human, her every little struggle pains me. I’m impatient — I want her back to the way she was, at least the way she was when I started this blog. Some days, the burden of this impatience is overwhelming. I look at today’s photo, and I compare it to the first one I posted, back on her 14th birthday. Is her muzzle whiter? Is the light in her eyes dimming? Compared to last August, maybe.

But Riley still props her head up on the couch for me to pet her. She still barks when it’s time to eat. She still follows me around the downstairs, particularly when I’m cooking. Will her mobility improve? Maybe it will — we’re started her back on Rimadyl, and she seems to be taking the very small dose OK. Maybe when we up the dose, she’ll move more easily. Will she still fall? Probably. But I need to remind myself that recovery is a gradual thing, and that a 14.5-year-old dog is not going to run around like a puppy. Even if she always will be my puppy. She’s still here, and she’s still herself. And that’s what matters.
