A year in the life of our Miss Riley

In which Miss Riley Has Inherited My Sleeping Abilities

on September 16, 2014

I can sleep through anything. Thunderstorms, the TV being on, ringing phones, alarm clocks…sometimes I think Riley has learned by example. As I’ve said before, some days when I come home, she sleeps on, and doesn’t get up to greet me. Today was one of those days. I came home, put my stuff away, opened the drapes, and nothing. I got down on the floor, laying my head right in front of her face, and just watched her.

Then I wondered, just how asleep was she? Her eyes were doing that rolled-back-in-her-head thing that really creeps the bejeezus out of me. She’d twitch every so often, but really didn’t seem aware of my presence, practically nose-to-nose with her.

So I experimented. Sort of a selfie. I had to take four or five just to get us properly framed (though it’s not the most flattering shot for either of us!), with the flash going off each time, and she didn’t stir (though the flashes certainly gave my brewing migraine something to chew on).

After I put the camera away, I opened all the sliding glass doors to the sunporch, hung up my jacket, and went upstairs to change clothes. She was awake and waiting at the bottom of the steps when I got back down.

I don’t imagine I could have done anything truly silly, like put a hat on her for a sleeping photo, but still, that was some kind of record for her.
